Kirana Stores May Handle Last Leg of Deliveries for Amazon and Myntra

The e-commerce giants, Amazon and Myntra are paying great attention towards the friendly neighbourhood Kirana Stores for handling the last leg of their deliveries. The e-commerce companies have significantly increased their use of this platform for last-mile delivery which in return helps them to reduce their delivery staff or they also have an option to engage the staff in other tasks. As per industry’s estimates, Amazon usually engages its neighbourhood store network for around one-third of its deliveries whereas Myntra for around two-thirds.

At the end of 2017, Amazon’s ‘I Have Space‘ (HIS) program grew about 40% year-on year to 17, 500 neighbourhood stores in around 225 cities in which it holds partnership with local stores which agree upon delivering products to customers within a radius of 2-4 Km.

When talking about Flipkart-owned Myntra, it’s been said that it has expanded its ‘Mensa Network’ to 6,200 stores in around 50 cities, as it was launched in April last year. Myntra has fulfilled around 60% of its orders through the stores. As per the statements made by Flipkart officials, it’s been said that Flipkart’s alternative delivery network which basically includes Apollo Pharmacy Stores handles around 20-30% of its deliveries during peak festive season sales.

However, the irony is that everybody thinks that these e-commerce giants are impacting the small kirana stores but the reality is that the programs initiated by the shopping websites helped the small kirana stores in finding a new use case for them, where they can also get predictability of the revenue.

It is generally observed that the fashion retailer’s neighbourhood store partners earn around Rs. 15,000 a month and with higher volume of deliveries this income rises. As far as the amount of deliveries handled by its store network are concerned, Amazon did not disclose the same.

Reducing Staff Count

As per the company, it’s been said that it chooses the mode of transportation based on various factors such as time commitment, fulfilment cost and past performance. On an average, Amazon’s store partners deliver 20-30 packages in a day which is equivalent to the average deliveries handled by the last mile delivery staff in the company. An Amazon India spokesperson said that these local entrepreneurs understand their area pretty well and have a good and clean image in their neighbourhood which in turn helps them to efficiently deliver and receive products.

Amazon is thinking of branding the IHS pickup stores as ‘Amazon Pickup’ for easy visibility, the company said. The head of Amazon Prime in India, Akshay Sahi had told in an interview that the company was looking to increase its pickup points to improve the last-mile service for customers as well as the availability of these pickup points during online checkout.

Amazon has also decreased the size of its last-mile delivery staff to 4,000 from 12,000 in 2016. Myntra mentioned that it has been able to divert much of its delivery staff to handle tasks such as try-and-buy orders as well as quality audits during product returns to know the reason behind customer’s dissatisfaction.

Apart from the Kirana Stores, the neighbourhood outlets being involved in last-mile deliveries include pharmacies, mobile accessory stores, tailoring shops and laundries. Investments in building these networks includes operating costs such as deputing field staff for delivering and reconciling orders, creating apps for the store partners, and sharing of the training content on customer management. According to industry experts, the large e-commerce companies such as Amazon can perform better in offering financial services such as credit or working loans to kirana stores, as well as providing inventory.

According to Guruprasad Srinivasan, President of Dependo, Logistics, a subsidiary of Quess Corp, the e-commerce shipments handled through the neighbourhood store channel has increased to 7% from 5% in the last year. Online grocery store, Big Basket poses a similar network of partner stores two years ago which is named ‘AasPaas’, but it discontinued this name after seeing little customer traction. According to TN Hari, the head of human resources at Big basket, they stopped using the old name AasPaas because they didn’t find many customers interested in that option.

Amazon India Progress Energizing; Completes 5 Years of Operations

The founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Amazon.com, Jeff Bezos, said on Wednesday that the progress seen in Amazon India business, in the last five years of operations is very “energizing”. Bezos mentioned in a letter to the customers on the homepage of Amazon.in, that the company was launched in India on June 5, 2013 with a vision to revolutionize the way India buys and sells.

He further wrote that the progress in just five years has been energizing and he is highly humbled and energized by the opportunities ahead. Bezos mentioned illustrations of growth in areas like customer and seller addition, delivery infrastructure and also products like Alexa and Kindle, which have been a success in India.

Amazon india

In order to compete with its home-grown rival Flipkart in India, Amazon has pumped in substantial funding and is all set to expand its operations in the country and also build a stronger delivery infrastructure. Bezos has already dedicated an investment of $5 Billion in the Indian market. The rivalry between these two e-commerce giants is set to intensify following another US retailer Walmart’s announcement of acquiring 77% stake in Flipkart with a deal of $17 Billion, last month.

As per Media reports, Amazon is looking forward to ramping up its investment in Indian market by around $2 billion, which will give the Indian Amazon unit more ammunition. However, the company has not yet officially commented on these reports. Amazon has been injecting funds into its various establishments in India, including its marketplace, Amazon Pay and wholesale business. All these investments have been aimed towards strengthening logistics, building warehouses, and increasing product assortment.

Brian Olsavsky, Amazon chief financial officer, said during a recent investor call that the company would continue to invest in India as they see great potential in Indian e-commerce market and progress as well, with both sellers and customers, even as the parent entity filed a loss of $622 million from international entities in the first quarter of 2018. Not only this, but the company is also investing remarkably in promotions and marketing as it aims to attract more customers to its online retail platform.

As per regulatory documents registered with the corporate affairs ministry, the Indian marketplace unit of the US e-commerce firm, Amazon Seller Services, saw its losses widen from INR 3,679.9 crores in the previous year to INR 4,830.6 crores for 2016-17 revenue. The company said that the increase in net loss is due to investments made towards opening new fulfilment centres, establishing infrastructure and technology advancements.

However, Amazon Seller Services also saw its fiscal rising 43% from INR 2,276 crore in the previous financial year to INR 3,256.6 crore in the year ended March 2017. The company, further said that it is confident of its future growth in India with its latest investments in launching new products and better services for its sellers and customers.

Amazon India Witnesses Losses Growing by 31% in FY17

Amazon India, one of the largest online retailers witnessed its losses mounting by 31% in FY17, which was INR 3,679 crore in the previous year and now is INR 4,830 crore. The rate of expansion of losses was much lower than the 100% increase in losses in financial year 2016 as compared to the preceding financial year.

Revenues of main Amazon’s India unit grew by 43% to INR 3,256 crore in the fiscal year ending March 2017, again at a slower pace as compared to the 123% jump to INR 2,275 crore in the financial year ending March 2016. Delivery charges of Amazon India rose up-to INR 2,549 crore from INR 1,510 crore, while employees benefit also grew from INR 500 crore, a year before, to INR 781 crore.

The company also saw increase in expenses in areas such as reimbursement of damages, payment processor fees to fulfilled inventories, according to the filings.

Amazon also reported in the filing that the company’s loss increased to INR 48,306 million, due to its investment in opening new fulfilment centres, establishing infrastructure and technology advancement. Not only this, but the company is also planning and investing on launching new services and products for its sellers and its customers.

Cloudtail which is one of the key sellers on Amazon India is Amazon’s joint venture with Infosys cofounder Narayana Murthy’s Catamaran. Its revenues grew to INR 5,700 crore in FY17 and has also registered a profit of INR 1.5 crore after tax. However, Cloudtail posted net profit (before tax) of ₹1.59 crore in FY17, against a net loss (before tax) of ₹30.25 crore in FY16.

On the other hand, in year ended March 2017, expenses went up by 24% from ₹4,621.4 crore to ₹5,732.9 during the period under consideration. While in 2015, as per reports via Mint, primary growth driver for Amazon India have been the sales from Cloudtail. These account for almost 40% of its overall revenues. Most of Amazon’s sales back then came from electronics and fashion segments.

Redmi Y2, India Variant of Redmi S2 to launch on June 07 Exclusively at Amazon

Xiaomi India had announced last month that it would be launching a new ‘Y’ phone on June 7. Now with less than a week left till the launch of the new device, news has surfaced that the device will be an Amazon Exclusive. The pictures accompanying the reveal show that the phone will have an impressive selfie camera with an LED flash in the very Redmi S2-esque body.

Redmi S2

Xiaomi’s Redmi Y2 is expected to be launched as the India variant of the Redmi S2 selfie-focused smartphone at an event in New Delhi on June 7. The teaser for the Redmi Y2 flaunts the hashtag #FindYourSelfie, and also it will come as a direct competitor to the Oppo Realme 1, which surprisingly is another Amazon India exclusive smartphone.

Amazon has listed a “new smartphone launch” from Xiaomi just a week ahead of the company’s much awaited Redmi S2 smartphone on its website. The Redmi Y2 smartphone launch is not official yet, because Amazon website’s page does not reveal which Xiaomi smartphone would be launched. It is, in fact, the teasers which have been making rounds for the launch invite, emphasising the alphabet ‘Y’, is a somewhat subtle reference to the new smartphone, pointing to the Indian variant of the Redmi S2. Users can now register for receiving a notification via email when the phone will actually be launched.

The Amazon listing seems to confirm that the Redmi Y2 smartphone would be available exclusively through the e-commerce giant’s online marketplace. A few details that have been released which include the smartphone will come equipped with a Snapdragon processor, selfie LED light, dual rear camera, and fingerprint sensor. These features are very reminiscent of the Redmi S2, and the new phone is supposed to be the successor to the Redmi Y1, thus the speculation on it being called the Y2. Xiaomi’s Redmi Y1 was launched in November and featured many selfie-centric features, such as an LED selfie-light.

Xiaomi has decided against bringing an all-new model to India, instead focussing on rebranding and slightly modifying its Redmi S2 for the Indian market as the Redmi Y2. The Redmi S2, which debuted in China last month, was Xiaomi’s first smartphone in the Redmi S-series. It came in two variants, a 3GB RAM with 32GB internal storage, and a 4GB RAM 64GB storage variant, priced at CNY 999 (approximately Rs. 10,600) and CNY 1,299 (around Rs. 13,700) respectively. The price tag for the Redmi Y2 in India has not yet been officially revealed.

Redmi Y2 smartphone specifications

Redmi Y2 is expected to launch with the same specifications as its international sibling, Redmi S2. It will support dual-SIM (probably Nano-sim) and will run on Android-based MIUI 9. The screen is expected to be 5.99-inch HD+ (720×1440 pixel) display with an impressive 70.8 percent NTSC colour gamut. Powered by a Snapdragon 625 SoC processor, the phone would offer up to 4GB of RAM, along with a dual rear camera setup with a 12-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor. Further, it has a 16-megapixel sensor on the front which supports features such as AI Portrait Mode, AI Smart Beauty, Front HDR, and Face Unlock. There would also be a feature called soft light flash module, which would decrease the intensity of a camera flash, up to more appropriate levels. Users would have two storage options to choose from, a 32GB variant and a 64GB variant, both of which sport expandable memories via micro SD card (up to 256GB) via a dedicated slot. The Redmi S2 will also support all the latest connectivity options like 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.2, GPS/ A-GPS. Other than that, the standard feature would include a 3.5mm headphone jack and Micro-USB port and packs a 3080mAh battery.

KVIC to Hawk Khadi Fabric and Other Readymade Garments via Amazon

KVIC, or Khadi and Village Industries Commission as it is more commonly known, is currently in talks with Amazon to begin sales of khadi fabric and ready-made garments on the e-commerce giant’s platform, apart from other such cottage industry products of rural India, such as honey, soaps, and shampoo. Some of these products have already found their way on the marketplace, and have become quite popular too. Now, this government agency wishes to let khadi products enjoy a bout of success too, thus giving our struggling cottage industries some much-needed help.

Amazon Offers

The talks between KVIC and Amazon have been aimed at encashing the recent boom in the sale of khadi products and making them available at every doorstep in the country. National news outlet, Times of India shared some insight on the topic earlier, claiming to have the statistics for khadi sales during 2017-18. According to them, khadi sales have grown nearly 25% to Rs 2,503 crore during this duration. Further in TOI’s report, they stated that previously, there was a 29% rise, during 2015-16, and an even stronger growth of 33% during 2016-17.

This sudden venture into online sales and marketing is not out of character for KVIC. They have always had great ambitions, and have previously expanded beyond its own stores to enter into tie-ups with companies such as Arvind Mills, Raymond and even the Aditya Birla Group. Apart from that, they have store-in-store arrangements with the likes of companies such as Globus. KVIC has even more projects underway, such as opening Khadi Malls in addition to revamping all its existing stores, bringing them closer to the modern world. A tie-up with Amazon is expected to make products much more accessible than it is today, riding on the back on Amazon’s brilliant delivery network and wonderful marketplace experience.

In similar news, Amazon India has expressed interest in expanding the clothing options on their marketplace last year, when they faced immense competition form Flipkart and Flipkart owned online clothing stores Jabong and Myntra. Amazon India has been struggling in the Fashion and Apparel department ever since, but now with KVIC products listed on its website, things are set to change. The inclusion of khadi rather than mainstream products ensures two things. Firstly, it makes sure that people looking for authentic traditional wear are attracted to Amazon.in. Secondly, it ensures that they attract the hipster crowd, one that isn’t looking for a set of mainstream T-shirts and jeans. This would also help elevate khadi’s popularity as well as its premium positioning.

Currently, Khadi-branded products such as shampoo and scrubs are available through several different registered sellers with Amazon.in, but KVIC now wants to directly come on to the platform, riding on the belief that online shopping is the way forward, especially when targeting middle class buyers seeking to meet their daily requirements.

A KVIC official was quoted saying “We have held preliminary talks with Amazon and the arrangement should be worked out shortly”. The person did not wish to be identified. According to sources, KVIC is not looking at immediate tie-ups with Flipkart or other marketplaces. Although this could have been a great move regarding Flipkart, as its future is uncertain with all the drama and controversy regarding Walmart deal and stepping down of one of its founders and CEO Sanjay Bansal, the move cannot be called brilliant with regards to clothing based marketplaces like Jabong and Myntra. But this is only regarding the immediate future, and KVIC could later change its mind, offering to list its products on other websites too.

Under the current deal with Amazon, KVIC will maintain its own inventory and warehouses, instead of letting Amazon do it for them. This will ensure complete autonomy over products, and Amazon will only be involved in the shipping and delivery process.

Amazon India Made its First Investment in Acko, Online-Only Insurance Provider

The online retail giant, Amazon India, has made its first investment in the insurance sector of the country. The e-tail platform has made an investment of $12 million in Acko, which is an online-only insurance provider company in India. Acko has confirmed the news of receiving this major funding from Amazon. The founder of Chrys Capital, Ashish Dhawan, also came on board and participated in the latest funding round for Acko.

The other participant of this round was Catamaran Ventures, who is an already existing investor for Acko. Catamaran Ventures is the private investment firm of Narayana Murthy, who is also the co-founder of Infosys. The different high profile names who participated in the funding round for Acko were Hemendra Kothari, who is the Chairman of DSP BlackRock, Atul Nishar, who is the Chairman of Hexaware Technologies, and Rajeev Gupta, the founder of Arpwood Capital. However, Accel Partners, SAIF partners, Swiss Re Reinsurance Holding Company Ltd, Venk Krishnan and Subba Rao from NuVentures, and Transamerica Ventures Fund comprise as the other partners in Acko.

The main reason for Amazon to invest about 81.2 crores in Acko is that Amazon wishes to back companies which are focused on ensuring a better customer experience with the use of technologies. As stated by Amit Agarwal, SVP and Country Manager of Amazon India, “Acko is a young and nimble start-up bringing technology and data-led innovation to the insurance sector to deliver a better insurance experience for customers.” Amazon also wants to explore the potential of insurance field in the country where it foresees an opportunity of Rs. 9000 crore from insurance with the help of innovative and customized policies for insurance.

Currently, India cannot be called well insured as a large part of the average Indian population is not aware of the benefits of insurance and is thus unwilling to invest in it. With this new tie-up, Acko can use the shopping patterns of the customers of Amazon to maximum benefit by suggesting insurance products to them based on these patterns. As an example, if a customer purchases a lot of car accessories and care products, they can be suggested to avail for car insurance or four wheeler plans accordingly.

The founder of Acko, Varun Dua, says that they will use this investment to build a stronger technology team and will focus on brand building activities as well as delivering data analytics. Acko, as a startup, was founded in 2016 and now it has received a major funding which has pushed its valuation to around $100 million. Acko is India’s latest general insurance company. It specializes in providing highly personalized insurance products by using data and analytics and delivering products through its digital platform. Currently, they have car insurance, bike insurance, and mobile protection to offer to customers. It has added a big achievement by partnering with Ola cabs to provide in-ride insurance to the cab riders. They are now aiming to offer travel insurance products and Healthcare products in the near future.

Amazon Wholesale Records a Profit of $413.7K in FY17

Amazon, which has a strong position in the Indian e-commerce market, has managed to reach great heights from the very beginning and now Amazon India’s B2B Arm, Amazon Wholesale has recorded a profit of $413.7K (INR 2.8 Cr) in FY17. The data clearly shows that the company is leading towards better with each passing day.

This profit can give a boost to the company when it is preparing to compete with its rival Flipkart. Walmart recently acquired Flipkart and the deal led to the valuation of the rival at 16 Billion, so Amazon is already in the process to prepare a strong strategy to beat Flipkart.

Amazon Offers

According to the reports citing regulatory filings, Amazon’s B2B wholesale distributor purchased goods worth $1.14 Bn (INR 7,734 Cr) in FY17, in comparison to $591.1K (INR 4 Cr) in the previous year. This huge increase in the purchase by the company is due to the change in ecommerce guidelines in 2016. As per the guidelines, sales from a single seller could not exceed 25% of the total gross merchandise volume (GMV) of a marketplace. Amazon India has used its BEB arm Amazon Wholesale as buyer and distributor to new sellers.

If we talk about the analytics, Amazon Wholesale has reduced its inventory of goods by $108.74 Mn (INR 736 Cr) in FY17 and has increased its turnover by 2,700 times in FY16-17, recording $1.08 Bn (INR 7,000 Cr) worth sales in FY 16-17. So, the turnover of this Amazon’s B2B arm is increasing. Other than this, Amazon India reported over 105% growth in revenue in FY17 and according to its regulatory filings; Amazon Seller Services posted an increase of 41% in earnings of the company.

With all this, the company has recently infused $306 Mn funding in its Indian arm, Amazon Seller Services. So, with this, Amazon Seller Services’ capital infusion touched $1.3 Bn (INR 8,150 Cr) for FY18.

The profits are already boosting the company to move forward with energy and with this, another encouragement for the company came from the Citi research report which said that Amazon is expected to be valued at 16 Billion and Amazon India is expected to reach $70 Bn in GMV and $11 Bn in net sales by 2027. The report also added that the Indian ecommerce market expected grow at a 21% CAGR over the next 10 years to reach a mark of $202 Bn. Also, according to a report by Morgan Stanley, the Indian e-commerce market reached $33 Bn registering a 19.1% growth in 2016-2017. So, Amazon can see this as an opportunity for it to grab more and more customers.

However, Amazon had committed an investment of $5 Bn in India and the Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos claimed in a letter to Amazon’s shareholders that its paid subscription service, Prime, have added more members in India in its first year than any other geography in the company’s history.

Other than this, Amit Agarwal, Amazon India head, said that the company expects groceries and household products to account for over half of its business in India in the next five years. In view of this, 15 fulfilment centres in Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Mumbai have been opened by Amazon to create a specialised network for its groceries business.

However, Flipkart’s B2B arm reported a net loss of $36 Mn (INR 244 Cr) for FY17, a 55% slump from its $80.3 Mn (INR 544.5 Cr) during the previous fiscal and also after Walmart playing a major role in Flipkart, Softbank has left it, so it would be interesting to see how both Amazon and Flipkart will compete in the coming time. However, Softbank is expected to invest in the Alibaba-backed Paytm Mall which can also bring a new turn to the story.

No Questions Asked’ not Anymore; Amazon Reserves the Right to Terminate Accounts for Excessive Returns

Are you one of those nit-picky buyers who return products too much? Are you one of those who believe in testing the product during 30-day money back period instead of relying on the reviews about its quality? Are you in any way exploiting and abusing the no questions asked’ policy Amazon has provided to ensure good customer experience. Well, not anymore!

The pioneer of online shopping, Amazon have been successfully able to pull customers from brick-and-mortar physical stores over the years. This is very much due to their ‘no questions asked’ return policy. Since, the quality of an online product is a matter of doubt which can only be cleared once you have the actual product in hand, working.

Amazon understood the problem and provided its users an option to return any product in 30 day period following delivery date. Anyone could return an item within 30 days without having to give an explanation which also spared the customer disputes with couriers, sellers and manufacturers over defective or unsuitable goods.

But, not anymore. The Economic Times have been tracking activities of the ecommerce giant in the past couple of months. In an article published recently on their website, the news portal revealed how Amazon USA has been quizzing users over returned items. The report has been seconded by The Wall Street Journal which also says that users with return items more than 10% were banned from the website.

Although, it is yet unclear that when this ban period will lift. However, banned users are restricted from making any new orders as of now. Twiterratis have been purring in their views on bold step, some even going a step further and called it demeaning and disrespectful to the buyers.

There has not been any official statement from Amazon about this step. Although, the return policy does not stop users from returning their products and does not even warn them during the return request. However, its conditions of use say it reserves the right to terminate accounts at its discretion. According to the wall street journal report, Amazon refused to tell how many returns could be too many.

A major spokesperson from Amazon in an interview shared, “We want everyone to be able to use Amazon, but there are rare occasions where someone abuses our service over an extended period of time,” He also said. “We never take these decisions lightly, but with over 300 million customers around the world, we take action when appropriate to protect the experience for all our customers.”

Nir Nissim, an Amazon customer told the Journal that his account was closed recently without and prior notice after he returned a computer drive earlier this year following return of four items in the previous year.

He told that he received an email from Amazon that read: “You cannot open a new account or use another account to place orders on our site,” however the mail did not clarify the reason behind his account closure that had been trigged due to too many returns.

This was really unsettling to the user because he had an unused $450 gift card to Amazon. When he was able to finally contact a customer service representative after repeated attempts, he was told that it was because he had made too many returns in recent months. It was only after he directly emailed Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos that another Amazon employee replied and agreed to reactivate his Amazon account.
