Moreover, because the voice is the device’s prominent feature, the company felt confident with launching the Google Home with the Google Assistant.

Furthermore, when asked about the content and further development of the Google home and its battle in the market with the Amazon Echo, Rishi Chandra answered the queries in a manner which proved that the Google has a well-thought team of strategists to look over their product.

US-Based Technology Giant, Amazon India’s Business Valued at $16 Billion

One of the most common perceptions about tech giants in India is that Flipkart has taken over complete control in India in the recent times. Its recent deal with Walmart presumably gave it a lead over Amazon. But, according to a Citi Research Report, Amazon India value i.e. market share is said to be 30% which is same as that of Flipkart. The report valued the former at USD 16 billion right now and expects it to reach at USD 70 billion in Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV) with USD 11 billion in net sales by 2027. The development came after Walmart’s acquisition of Flipkart valued the latter much higher at USD 20-22 billion.

According to the report released on May 17, “We believe the Indian ecommerce market will grow at a 21% CAGR over the next 10 years to $202 billion, that Amazon could capture 35% of this market and that the company could generate more than $10 billion in revenue and nearly $1.5 billion in FCF (free cash flow) by 2027.”

The report was made by two of the Citi’s senior analysts namely Mark May and Hao Yan. The analysts used a Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) to arrive at Amazon India’s valuation and the value did not consider Amazon’s cloud business here which is valued separately. According to Rahul Chowdhary, a partner at venture capital firm Stellaris, “Most of the value of Amazon right now comes from the dominant retail position in North America and AWS business. Right now, India is very marginal. But these companies are here today because they know in 5-10 years, India will be a big economy where they need market share.”

While the valuation isn’t based on a deal like that of Flipkart-Walmart, it pegged Amazon India at second position in the list of most valued businesses in the county, after Flipkart.

In the annual letter to his shareholders he said, “Amazon.in is the fastest growing marketplace in India and the most visited site on both desktop and mobile. Our Amazon Prime added more members in India in its first year than any previous geography in Amazon’s history.” Prime Video is investing in original Indian content largely, the letter said.

A combined market share of 39.1% was held by Flipkart, including online fashion retailers Myntra and Jabong while Amazon India boasted of a share of 31.1% in accordance to Forrester Research. Alibaba and SoftBank-backed Paytm Mall had a market share of about 5.6% in 2017, in its first full year of operations.

The battle between these three will further extend to grocery. While Amazon India has already allocated USD 500 million for its grocery retail business, Alibaba has backed India’s largest grocery retailer Big Basket. With the entry of Walmart, Flipkart will also push itself in this domain.

How do you view your current performance?

If I lower the prices, so does the competition. Hence, there is no differentiation but a very large generalization in the industry. The only factor which enables us to stand out is service. So, basically your boxes should fail less, there must be good picture quality, the user interface has to be at par and whenever there is a discrepancy the response time should be the least. Our focus is customer satisfaction.

How much is the current revenue valued at?

It is in the ballpark of Rs.6, 000 crores, the daily turnover would be Rs.20 crores based on what the customers recharge every day. That is what I collect from the market every day.

How many subscribers do you have today and what is the growth rate?

We are adding on subscribers on a basis of 15-20% progression every year. The revenue is on par with this percentage along with the profitability.

Where is your growth coming from?

In the US, cord-cutting occurred due to insanely high prices of cables when compared to OTT (over the top) prices. Cable cost, for example, was $100, then OTT like Netflix was $10, so obviously there was a shift. While in India if the cost of cable is $5, then OTT such as Netflix is still $10 and to watch the product you need to consume $15-20 worth of internet and the whole cost comes up to $30. Not many customers in India can afford that. Hence India will be always an ‘and’ and not an ‘or’ land. We may have OTT and stream online, but television is our first love.

But you announced a tie-up with Netflix.

Yes, we are going to be the supplier of Netflix, Hotstar, Amazon Prime and YouTube. We on working on changing the box which can receive both the signals- from the satellite as well as the broadband. Basically, the change in hardware at your home will enable you to watch on your TV screen, live TV via satellite whenever you want to and OTT via broadband whenever you want to.

So, is DTH feeling the heat from OTT?

It is not really pressurized. It is because I breathe content business. My livelihood depends on the consumer. I will act as a middleman and buy the content from the broadcasters earlier and supplying it to the customer via satellite. All customers want are a plethora of choices, we give them that on a platter for a nominal amount. What the consumers want to watch, my job is to get to for them.
